Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune condition that affects the gastrointestinal tract (gut).
It falls into a group of conditions called inflammatory bowel disease.
Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. The most commonly affected sites in the gastrointestinal tract are the small bowel, large bowel (colon) and anus. At times, Crohn’s disease may also affect other parts of the body, such as the skin, joints and eyes. Which parts of the body are affected by Crohn’s disease is different for each patient.
Crohn’s disease is most commonly diagnosed in adolescents and young adults, however it can be diagnosed at any age.
